EXCESSIVE TEARING

Excessive tearing may occur when the "pipe" which drains tears from the eye into the nose becomes blocked. Epiphora is the medical term used when the excess tears spill over the eyelid and run down the face. Sometimes the blockage of the "tear pipe" causes an infection which results in a painful swelling in the inner corner of the eyelids. Fortunately, excessive tearing can usually be treated with the surgery.

The surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure. (there is usually no need for hospitalization). Local anesthesia with light sedation or general anesthesia can be used so that there is little, if any, pain during or even after the procedure.
