Eyelid Plastic Surgery Tampa Bay
Area
Eyelid plastic surgery is a very
popular cosmetic procedure to lift drooping or baggy eyelids in
a procedure called blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery is also
essential in treating a number of other common conditions that
are less well known that require the knowledge and skills of a
highly trained practitioner.
Dr. Lawrence Kass M.D. is a
Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery in
Facial Cosmetic Surgery. He is Fellowship trained in Oculo-Facial
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and is a specialist in treatment of
eyelid disorders by plastic surgery or other protocols.
Here are some of the common
eyelid conditions and information about surgery or treatments.
Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of the eyelids
is termed "blepharoplasty". Blepharoplasty surgery is usually an
outpatient procedure.
Blepharoplasty surgery can provide both cosmetic and functional
improvement with minimal risk of serious problems and is one of the most common cosmetic procedures done both in men and women
in the United States.
Blepharospasm
Blepharospasm is an involuntary squeezing of the eyelids. Blepharospasm is a chronic
condition, which too often progressively worsens. Although no
cure currently exists, patients have excellent treatment
options. Blepharospasm can result in
prolonged eyelid closure and severe visual disability. It can
also be very emotionally upsetting to the patient when the
contractions occur in social settings and cannot be controlled.
Browptosis
Endoscopic Brow Lift Surgery
As we age, our forehead lengthens and our eyebrows
descend. This causes excess skin to build up on our upper eyelid
and may result in unsightly furrows in the forehead as a
compensatory mechanism. With the newer, state-of-the-art,
endoscopic approach to forehead lifts, only a few small
incisions are used. This approach allows the cosmetic plastic
surgeon to see under the skin with a special camera called an
endoscope.
Double Eyelid Surgery
or Asian Blepharoplasty
Most Asians have a “single eyelid” resulting
in a relatively narrow eye aperture. The Asian Blepharoplasty
creates a “double upper eyelid” with a well defined lid crease,
and opens up the aperture of the eye, creating a look of
alertness and beauty.
Ectropion Repair Surgery
Ectropion,
or out-turning, of the eyelid usually involves the lower eyelid.
The lower eyelid pulls away from the eye and visibly appears to
sag down. To effectively treat ectropion
requires a special understanding of the anatomy and
pathophysiology of the eyelid. The excellent general plastic
surgeon who does tummy tucks and breast augmentations almost
NEVER has been trained in eyelid anatomy or pathophysiology and
should NOT be the one you choose to treat your ectropion, which
should be treated only by a fully fellowship trained
oculo-facial surgeon.
Entropion Repair Surgery
Entropion,
or in-turning, of the eyelid can involve the upper or lower
eyelid. Symptoms occur due to the scratching of the eye by the
inwardly pointing eyelashes (trichiasis).
To effectively treat entropion requires a special understanding
of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the eyelid. Entropion should be treated only by a fully
fellowship trained oculo-facial surgeon. Fellowship in the
American Society of Oculo-facial Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery (ASOPRS) indicates that the surgeon has greatest
specialized training and expertise in this subspecialty.
Eye Prosthesis Plastic Surgery
At times it becomes necessary to surgically remove an eye that
has become severely damaged by disease or injury. New
surgical procedures have been developed that now may enable the
ophthalmic plastic surgeon to achieve acceptable movement of the
artificial eye even if the eye was removed years ago.
Eyelid Cancer Plastic Surgery
Skin
cancer often involves the skin of the eyelid or adjacent face.
Eyelid skin cancers occur most often on the lower eyelid but may
also be found on the eyelid margins, corners of the eye, eyebrow
skin or adjacent areas of the face.
Although radiation treatment may
be effective, because of the risks of serious side effects, it
is almost exclusively reserved for debilitated patients.
Complete removal of the tumor is critical to minimize the
possibility of recurrence, which is even more difficult to
manage. Once the tumor has been completely removed,
reconstructive eyelid plastic surgery is usually necessary.
Eyelid Ptosis Plastic Surgery
The medical term for a drooping upper eyelid is called ptosis
(TOE-sis) or blepharoptosis. In this condition, the border of
the upper eyelid falls to a lower position than normal. In
severe cases, the drooping eyelid can cover all or part of the
pupil and interfere with vision.
Ptsosis is usually due to weakness in the muscles or the nerves
of the eyelid. To effectively treat ptosis requires a special
understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the eyelid
and should be treated only by a fully
fellowship trained oculo-facial surgeon. Fellowship in the
American Society of Oculo-facial Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery (ASOPRS) indicates that the surgeon has greatest
specialized training and expertise in this subspecialty.
Spontaneous Eye Tearing: Excessive Tears &
Epiphora
Epiphora is the
medical term used when the excess tears spill over the eyelid
and run down the face. Usually excessive tearing can be
controlled medically but sometimes, it may be necessary to treat
surgically. To effectively treat excessive tearing and
epiphora requires a special understanding of the anatomy and
pathophysiology of the eyelid and of the lacrimal (tear) system.
Thyroid Eye Disease Graves Disease Treatment
One of the most common thyroid
diseases is hyperthyroidism, in which there is an overproduction
of thyroid hormones. People with hyperthyroidism may experience
some degree of eye difficulty. Often, even if the overly active
thyroid gland is brought under control, the eye symptoms persist
or may even worsen. In some cases, surgery is needed to correct
the condition. The function and appearance of the eyes can
usually be improved.
