Background
For many years, plastic surgeons were frustrated by their search
for rejuvenation procedures to correct sun damage and aging
skin. While facelift surgery provided the answer for jowls and
saggy skin, poor solutions remained for a patient with
significant facial aging due to sun damage. Specifically, the
leather-like criss-cross skin wrinkling and severe smoker’s
lines around the lips could not be addressed by even the most
advanced lifting techniques. Other skin problems such as
irregular pigmentation, bronzing of the skin, age spots,
pre-cancers, chronically red, irritated areas, and fine wrinkles
likewise were not corrected by surgery.
These textural changes, caused by
the sun, are very unsightly, and may be the main contributor to
our aged appearance. There is progressive thinning of the skin
due to the loss of collagen, micro-scarring from repetitive
movement of facial muscles, and irregular pigmentation from sun
exposure. Once the skin becomes etched and pigmented, there must
be a change in the actual skin itself to correct these problems.
Because all of these textural

dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. While all
of these modalities, and their variations such as CO2, erbium,
