Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is PRP?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. It is an extremely hot topic in the world of cosmetic surgery today as it is in practically all aspects of medicine. Although it has been used for years by athletes to treat injuries because of its ground breaking healing properties, it’s popularity has soared most recently with the publicity and media fascination surrounding ancillary procedures such as the Vampire Facial and the Vampire Facelift. These provocatively named terms refer to the use of PRP during Facial or Facelift procedures. But what does PRP actually mean and how does it work?

It is widely known that in addition to the cellular components, the blood in our body has a liquid component as well.  Our blood consists of 4 main components:

  • Plasma
  • Red Blood Cells
  • White Blood Cells
  • Platelets

The platelets are found in the liquid component of the blood and are very rich in proteins. These proteins are also known as growth factors and they provide for the body’s remarkable healing abilities. The growth factors found in PRP are 5-10 times more than the quantity that you find in normal blood.  This is because of the centrifugation process during the making of the PRP separates components of the blood according to their density.

In addition to these crucial proteins, PRP is also rich in the multi-potential cells called stem cells. Because they are multi-potential, these stems cells can mature into different types of normal body cells and it is believed that this is what accounts for the body’s remarkable ability for rejuvenation.

What can Platelet-Rich Plasma do for me?

This treatment is used to improve the appearance of:

  • Wrinkles
  • Scars
  • Sun damage
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Adjunct Treatment with Fat Grafting (Transfer)

Although its popularity began for treating injuries for athletes, these days the cosmetic world has been taking by storm with the miraculous results of PRP.  It is organic in nature and it can extremely good for rejuvenating and healing the skin. It is not medicine or a pill. There are no foreign substances. The incredible ability of PRP comes from using your very own blood and spinning that blood to increase the concentrations of platelets, growth factors and stem cells.

What does the procedure involve?

We first take blood from our patients and using a centrifuge we separate the components of the blood. This process is called centrifugation or spinning of the blood. Once all the platelets are concentrated by removing the cellular components, we inject the Platelet-Rich Plasma into the desired areas. The high concentration of growth factors, platelets and stem cells will enhance the vitality of the skin and speed up the healing process.

The plasma is rich in proteins and that provides all the necessary nutrients to the skin. This will help the skin look vibrant and alive just like it was when you were young. The skin is stimulated by the injected plasma and as a result the stem cells produce more collagen, generate new cells and rejuvenate the appearance of your skin.

Platelet-Rich Plasma is one of the most natural ways to enhance your facial appearance and it is amazing to treat acne scars and to boost the results of Hetter Chemical Peels. In fact, PRP will enhance the healing process from ANY procedure. It will revitalize the skin in the surrounding areas and will boost the health of neighboring cells. Many patients after taking the Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment notice that their face has gained a new glow. As time progresses they look more and more refreshed and energized. It is not magic and it is not imaginary. It is PRP!

What to expect from this treatment?

There are no side effects and risks are extremely rare. The injected plasma is an organic substance that comes from your own body so it is easily absorbed back into the system.

The skin regeneration will take some time, usually between weeks to months, depending on your case. It is great because the results keep getting better and better as time goes by.

During the treatment Dr.Kass will ice the injected regions in order to minimize bruising. It will also help to minimize swelling and skin irritation. If there is any swelling and bruising it only lasts just a couple of days. You would be able to return to work and your daily lifestyle in no time.

The results are long lasting and many patients are extremely happy even years after the treatment. Studies have verified the tremendous and long lasting results from Platelet Rich Plasma. Why not call today for a consultation and ask what PRP can do for you!
